Bikaner was founded in 1488 by the 5th son Rao Bika of the Rathore Rajput Rao Jodha.Bikaner town, is surrounded by a 7 km long embattled wall with five gateways. Bikaner’s forts, palaces, public buildings – magnificent creations in red and yellow sandstone, are living manifestations of its rich historical and architectural legacy. The imposing palaces, beautiful and richly sculptured temples of red and yellow sand stones display some of the finest creations of Rajput civilization. Fort and the palaces are outside the city walls.

Today, it also famous for its woolen shawls, blankets, carpets and delicacies like bhujias, papads, sugar candies and rasgullas. Bikaer treasures Indira Gandhi Canal which irrigates a large area of arid land around.
